College faculty, administrators, and graduate students are invited to register for a regional “Reacting to the Past” Conference at Duke University, January 19-20, 2013.

“Reacting to the Past” (RTTP) consists of elaborate games, set in the past, in which students are assigned roles informed by seminal texts in the history of ideas. The curriculum aims to promote student engagement with big ideas and to improve intellectual and academic skills. RTTP was honored with the 2004 Theodore Hesburgh Award (TIAA-CREF) as the nation’s outstanding pedagogical innovation in undergraduate teaching and learning. Peer-reviewed studies have also illustrated that RTTP is remarkably successful in motivating students and energizing faculty.

Participants will learn about the RTTP curriculum by engaging in intensive workshops on particular games, including: Defining a Nation: India on the Eve of Independence, 1945 and Frederick Douglass, Abolitionism, Slavery, and the Constitution, 1845. The registration fee is $75 for faculty and administrators and $25 for graduate students. For further details and registration information, please visit http://reacting.barnard.edu/duke-2013. The priority registration deadline is December 21, 2012.
