National Council on Public History/International Federation for Public History Annual Meeting, Apr 17-20
The joint National Council on Public History/International Federation for Public History annual meeting program is now posted! Held in Ottawa this coming April 17-20th, the meeting features sessions of interest to Canadian historical and heritage community including:
-two roundtables on the cuts and new directions by the federal government and the repercussions on Library and Archives Canada, Parks Canada and the Canadian Museum of Civilization
-an artifact workshop at the Canada Science and Technology Museum
-a labour history walking tour of Ottawa led by Robert Hatfield, Workers’ History Museum
-tours of the Diefenbunker, the Canada Agricultural Museum, Pinhey's Point Historic Site, and the collections storage area at the Canada Science and Technology Museum
-a free public plenary by the director of the Historical Documentation Centre and Museum of the Politecnico of Turin, Italy, who will conduct an "artifact autopsy"
-sessions on digital approaches at small museums; working with older audiences in museums; how to bring students into archives; WWI celebrations and many others
-a 'speed networking' session with prominent museum, government and parks workers for students and new professionals
In the past the NCPH meetings have been predominantly American, however, this year over 100 speakers come from Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
