Fiftieth Anniversary of the Dictionnaire biographique du Canada (DBC)

(1961–2011)

To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the Dictionnaire biographique du Canada is hosting two important events to which the academic community is invited. First, on 17 November, the DBC will hold a colloquium on the subject of biography in Room 3244 (Salle du Conseil), Pavillon De Koninck, Université Laval, from 9:15 a.m. to noon and 2:00 p.m. to 3:35 p.m. During the event seven speakers will explain how the biographies they wrote for the DBC contributed to knowledge and research in various fields of Canadian history, such as political, economic and regional, religious, labour, native, literary, and legal history. J. Andrew Ross, postdoctoral fellow and lecturer at the Historical Data Research Unit, University of Guelph, Ontario, and Andrew D. Smith, senior lecturer in history at Coventry University, England, will conclude the colloquium before launching the volume they edited, Les entrepreneurs canadiens, du commerce des fourrures au krach de 1929, during a reception at 4:00 pm in the Hall Émile-Nelligan, Pavillon De Koninck. [The English edition, Canada's entrepreneurs from the fur trade to the 1929 stock market crash, is forthcoming.] Published by Les Presses de l’Université Laval, this volume brings together 61 biographies of businessmen and businesswomen from the DBC/DCB, which is under the direction of Réal Bélanger and John English. During the launch in the presence of special guests, the DBC will pay tribute to the many authors who collaborated over the past 50 years.
The following day, 18 November, the DBC will open its doors to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Come meet the members of the team, discover this 50-year-old research project, and browse its publications in Room 6455, Pavillon Casault. All are welcome! For information: 418-656-3578 or dbc@dbc.ulaval.ca.
