The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria is offering the following courses and workshops for the fall:
 
HA 489G Cultural Landscapes (6-day on campus)
Sept. 22 - 27, 2014
Instructor: Wendy Shearer
Topics include:
·      evaluating heritage values, significance, and integrity
·      consulting effectively with stakeholders and the community
·      planning sustainable management strategies

HA 488M Volunteer Management (2-day on campus)
Oct 2-3, 2014
Instructor: Lisa Mort-Putland
Topics include:
·      Understanding the principles and practices that frame Volunteer Management Programs in Canada;
·      Providing tools and strategies to recruit, assess, place, retain, and evaluate volunteers; and
·      Enhancing your understanding of the emerging trends that are impacting volunteerism and the museum and heritage community.
 
HA 488H Indigeneity and the Museum (6-day in Montreal, QC)
Oct 20-25, 2014
Co-instructors: Chris Creighton-Kelly and France Trépanier
Topics include:
becoming more familiar with the recent history of Aboriginal artworks
obtaining knowledge and perspective from two site visits
analyzing case studies within museums both successful and unsuccessful

HA 488C Communicating Through Exhibits (6-day on campus)
Nov. 3 - 8, 2014
Instructor: Tim Willis
Topics include:
·      Understand an exhibition as a medium of communication
·      Consider the characteristics of visitors, their needs and learning styles
·      Planning an exhibition

HA486A Museum Principles and Practices I (distance)
September 8 - December 14, 2014
Instructor: Deborah Tuyttens
Topics include:
·      the need to respect diverse cultural values and perspectives
·      the need to involve the communities in shaping museum collections, programming, and operations
·      the impact of information technologies on the work of the museum

HA 487A Heritage Resource Management (distance)
September 8 - December 14, 2014
Instructor: Chris Wiebe
Topics include:
·         current definitions of historic place, authenticity and conservation
·         links between heritage conservation and broader societal goals, such as sustainability.
·         approaches to heritage evaluation, planning, interventions, interpretation and urban revitalization, and introduces you to the roles of governments, organizations and citizens.
 
HA 488J Curatorship: Contemporary Perspectives (distance)
September 8 - December 14, 2014
Instructor: Elisabeth Carter
Topics include:
·      an understanding of current issues and societal trends that affect curators and museums by situating current theory and practice within an historical context
·      an understanding of the current and evolving professional context and expectations which shape curatorial practice, along with the knowledge/skills/attitudes required
·      an understanding of “official” standards and competencies

HA 488U Managing Archival Collections (distance)
September 8 - December 14, 2014
Dr. Jennifer Douglas
Topics include:
·      the nature of archival materials
·      theories, principles, and practices governing archival management
·      legal, administrative, and professional frameworks

About Our Program
 
The Cultural Resource Management Program offers on-campus and distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and related organizations. Courses are designed to address the emerging needs of the sector and build your personal and organizational capacity.
 
In our courses, you interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community. Courses are taught by instructors who are leading professionals in the field.
 
Courses can be taken individually or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Individual credit and non-credit course registration options are also available. Choose the program and / or course best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
