The evolving role of historic sites and museums for modern times is the theme of The Past in the 21st Century, the first in a series of Conversations in Place being held at Rancho Los Alamitos on August 10, 2014. Nationally recognized directors and preservationists will explore how public cultural spaces are being reimagined for next-generation audiences in an ever-changing, multi-cultural world. Speakers include Richard West, the President & CEO of the Autry National Center of the American West; Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, and Chairman of the U.S. Advisory Council on Historic Preservation; and Pamela Seager, Executive Director of Rancho Los Alamitos.

About Rancho Los Alamitos

A 7.5-acre site, Rancho Los Alamitos was once part of the largest Spanish land grant awarded in California. The award-winning site is twice listed on the National Register of Historic Places – for its significance as Povuu’ngna and for the cultural and natural evolution of its landscape. Rancho Los Alamitos includes four acres of historic gardens primarily designed by the Olmsted Brothers during the 1920’s-30’s, an adobe-core Rancho House ca. 1800, and the early 20th century working ranch barns area.

About Conversations in Place 2014

Now in its third remarkable season, the Conversations in Place 2014 schedule commences this summer and features a stellar lineup of speakers that includes preeminent historians, scholars and preservationists, critically acclaimed journalists, writers, a futurist and an entrepreneur. The series, known for its unconventional and substantive content and diverse and remarkable guest lists, starts on August 10 and continues on September 14, October 19 and November 2.
