Teaching the Holocaust and Other Genocides: Opportunities, challenges and successes

At the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre

October 27, 2011

The Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre is organizing a professional development day for teachers to be held at the Centre (5151, Côte-Ste-Catherine, Montreal) on October 27, 2011.  The theme this year is "Teaching the Holocaust and Other Genocides: Opportunities, challenges and successes". Teachers and specialists will discuss the theoretical and educational issues raised when using a comparative approach to teaching about the Holocaust and other genocides. Best practices will be explored and demonstrated.

Some questions be examined are the following:
•    How can we ensure that the uniqueness and complexity of an event is maintained while searching for universal principles?
•    How can we develop a reasoned and well planned comparative approach when addressing genocides of the 20th and 21st centuries?
•    What are teachers already doing in their classroom? What are these successful practices? What are the expectations of teachers from this approach?
•    What are the responses from students?
