Captain G.H. Richards and the Vancouver Island Survey, Mar 12
March 12, 2014 1:00pm
Most people in Nanaimo are familiar with Mt. Benson, Mt. Moriarty, Mudge Island, De Courcy Island, Bowen Island and Galiano Island. What they may not know is that these and many other places were officially named by Cpt. G.H. Richards of the Royal Navy between 1857 and 1863. Richards and his crew were nautical surveyors and were tasked with surveying and charting the waters around Vancouver Island. Based on details from Richards’ own journal, this presentation will consider Richards as surveyor, and his and his crews’ contribution to our local history.
