Better Exhibits through Evaluation

Making Exhibits Better -- Before They're Even Built

We sometimes think of evaluation as something that happens when an exhibition is up and running – but by then, it’s expensive and difficult to make changes. Front-end evaluation and exhibit prototyping are low-cost, high-impact tools that let us realize the benefits of evaluation sooner, saving time, saving money, and allowing us to produce better exhibits.

That's why MAS is offering Front-End and Formative Evaluation for Exhibit Designers. This workshop for museum educators and exhibit designers involved in developing exhibitions will include discussions of the rationale and methods for doing front-end and formative evaluations. Examples will be drawn from all types of museums (e.g., history, science, natural history) and will include interactive and digital components.

About the Instructor

Beverly Serrell is the director of Serrell & Associates, specializing in the conceptual development of museum exhibitions, graphic communication and exhibit evaluation – 1979 to present. She is also the author of a wide range of publications on museum exhibits, including Exhibit Labels: An Interpretive Approach, Paying Attention: Visitors and Museum Exhibitions, and Judging Exhibitions: A Framework for Assessing Excellence. Her clients include natural history, cultural history, science, and art museums, zoos and aquariums, botanic gardens, nature centers and museum professional organizations.

This course will be held on 10 September at the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, SK.
