This article focuses on how to use historical narratives to teach history in the classroom, with the example of teaching the U.S. civil rights movement. The author explains that history is a narrative in terms of plot, time, and cause, discusses how interpreting historical narratives lets students participate in history, and analyzes the theories of historian Tom Holt, who emphasizes history as a narrative. She presents information on how she taught the civil rights movement though a master narrative, by questioning chronology, and through top-down causation.
