VanSledright, Bruce. “Fifth Graders Investigating History in the Classroom: Results from a Researcher-Practitioner Design Experiment.” Elementary School Journal 103(2) (2002): 131-60.
This study assessed the influence of emphasizing historical investigation with fifth graders through documentation of classroom activities and students' analysis of historical documents and images before and after the design experiment. Data suggested that the investigative approach holds promise for teaching fifth graders how to analyze historical documents as evidence, identify the nature of the documents as sources, judge their reliability and perspective, and corroborate details across accounts.
