Abstract/Summary: 

This study looks at students’ uncritical use of popular films to understand history. Seixas argues that films can be successfully used in the social studies classroom if carefully paired with other films: “Viewing other films whose underlying interpretive framework is less congenial to their own, may provide the stimulus for students to examine all film … critically” (p. 366). He further suggests that other forms of evidence will be used by students to critically examine the film’s historical message and that the curriculum needs to use techniques from cinema history and film criticism.
