The authors introduce a history teaching instrument known as the Protocol for Assessing the Teaching of History (PATH). The authors claim that PATH provides the establishment of a conversation among history teachers concerning teaching behaviors that contribute to quality instruction in the subject of history. The authors state that PATH attempts to engage students in what is termed the decomposition of practice for history teaching techniques. The authors state that PATH was modeled upon the Classroom Assessment Scoring System-Secondary (CLASS-S).
