This article focuses on how to teach history though the Geographic Information System (GIS), including student-centered instruction, teacher-centered instruction, and engagement in historiography. The authors provide a brief history on GIS software, explore how GIS can support inquiry-based learning, and explain how GIS is able to support critical thinking and conceptual understanding. Additionally, they provide GIS lessons in U.S. history on the French and Indian War, the Constitutional Convention, and the Whiskey Rebellion.
