Abstract/Summary:

Near the end of his career as a military, political. and social historian, Des Morton reflects on his trade and his definition of history as ‘another word for experience.’ Like most people, we can have a cheerful or a gloomy view of the past. Both approaches deliver messages about how we can seize more happiness or avoid repeating mistakes. Neither approach is fool-proof.
