McGregor, Heather E. "North of 60: Some Methodological Considerations for Educational Historians." Historical Studies in Education Special Issue (2015): 121-29.

Abstract/Summary:

In the Introduction to this Special Issue, Heather McGregor examines the approach that historians should take when analyzing northern history, particularly noting the importance of oral history and the need for an interdisciplinary approach that takes into account the unique culture and environment that is being examined north of the Arctic Circle.  Five types of methodological considerations are discussed: legacies of research; translation of indigenous ways into academic parlance; how to accommodate local practices; ethical dilemmas; and logistical concerns.  The article concludes with a call for historians to collaborate with one another so research in this field can continue to develop in an inclusive way.
