Abstract/Summary:

This book belongs to the series Contemporary Research in Education edited by Terry A. Osborn which looks at the gap between theory and practice in history education in order to engage students in learning. In Celluloid Blackboard, Alan Marcus and the contributing authors discuss the significant impact film has had on the lives of students. It is organized into three parts: Part One presents three frameworks for working with historical film; Part Two presents the results of four studies that examine students making sense of the past through film; and Part Three contains two chapters written by high school teachers who share their experiences of using film to teach history. An abstract of each chapter can be found on the Teaching Abstracts page of this website.
