Marcus, Alan S., and Thomas H. Levine. “Exploring the Past with Feature Film.” In Celluloid Blackboard: Teaching History with Film, edited by Alan S. Marcus, 1-13. Charlotte NC: Information Age Publishing, 2007.

Abstract/Summary:

Marcus and Levine discuss how feature films influence historical knowledge and understanding, and explain that while teachers should be critical of the potential pitfalls of the past represented in film, the authors recognize that commercial films offer the potential to motivate students, help students gain access to diverse perspectives, develop empathy, and connect their lives, values and concerns with the past, creating “historical film literacy” in students.
