Laville, Christian. “Historical Consciousness and Historical Education: What to Expect from the First for the Second.” In Theorizing Historical Consciousness, edited by Peter Seixas, 165-82. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2004.
In this chapter, Christian Laville historicizes the current interest in historical consciousness and historical thinking in history education. He states that with the lessening role of historians in defining collective unity and the interest in studies of identity and memory, an interest in historical thinking skills has taken over history education. Laville situates this discussion primarily in the context of European unification and questions if the emphasis on historical thinking skills really circumvents the emphasis on a singular national narrative.
