Abstract/Summary:

A literary criticism is provided in which the author discusses the ways in which the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry acts as a metaphor for the teaching of history. After summarizing the novel, the author explains how The Giver reflects the work of historians and teaches about historical skills such as comprehension and chronological thinking to its readers. Lesson plans for incorporating the novel into a secondary history classroom are then offered.
