Babal, Marianne. “Sticky History: Connecting Historians with the Public.” The Public Historian 32(4) (2010): 76-84.

Abstract/Summary:

Marianne Babal explains the National Council on Public History’s (NCPH) role behind the notion that historians, as professionals and not just academics, should play an active role within a broader society. The article then outlines the development of the NCPH and public history. Babal advocates for public historians to embrace their inclusive identity and understand the relationships public historians cultivate with their audiences. Babal also outlines how historians and curators need to understand visitors’ expectations, needs, and emotional engagement with exhibits and history. Babal ends the article by encouraging the NCPH to embrace entrepreneurialism and self-sufficiency in order to continue the organization’s goals in the future.
