Survey: Teachers and History
Dear colleagues:
The educational research unit “Making History” of the University of Ottawa (www.makinghistory-fairehistoire.ca), under the lead of Professor Stéphane Lévesque, has started a pan-Canadian initiative called “Teachers and History” which aims to study and survey current historical knowledge and practices of student teachers in faculties of education across Canada. The goal is to provide history educators and teacher education programs a more detailed and accurate portrayal of the population enrolled in history education programs in the Canadian provinces.
To achieve our goal, we have designed an online questionnaire on a variety of subject matters (background knowledge, educational studies, use of history, pedagogical knowledge), some of which are drawn from the recent comprehensive survey Canadians and Their Pasts. This bilingual instrument can be completed in class or at home using a personal computer. Data collected for the study will remain confidential and be used for academic purposes only. All participating professors and teacher education programs will have access to data at the end of the year.
We would like to invite you to participate in our survey. If you teach methods courses for history/social studies students, please invite them to complete the questionnaire. We also ask you to share this initiative with colleagues who might be teaching these methods courses at your institution during the academic year 2012-2013.

This study is unique in Canada since history educators do not have empirical data on student teachers enrolled in our diverse programs of study. We are thus thrilled to have you participate with your colleagues and students in this initiative.
For further details or questions about the survey, please contact Stéphane Lévesque.
All the best.
Stéphane Lévesque
