The Rocky Mountain Express

Join the Museum of Science as we hop aboard the Canadian Pacific Railway by way of Rocky Mountain Express.  The film, now showing in the Museum’s Mugar Omni Theater, tells the story of the construction of the first transcontinental railway that linked Canada from sea to sea.  It highlights the adventures and dangers that came with the construction of this railway that connected its population of fewer than 5 million people for the first time.

Journey back to the age of steam, when colossal feats of engineering and epic risk-taking united a vast, rugged continent. Ride alongside deep river canyons and over high mountain passes through some of the most picturesque and rugged landscapes on Earth.

Construction of the Canadian Transcontinental Railroad was one of the greatest engineering feats of all time as engineers from around the world labored to create this railroad.  They endured many challenges as the builders reached granite cliffs, erosive sandstone and deep lakes.  Thousands of lives were lost from blasting and avalanches, but the film shows the courage of these workers and how they made this challenge possible.

Award-winning filmmaker and train enthusiast Stephen Low brings you aboard a steam locomotive to retrace the original route of the Canadian Pacific Railway. You can discover the stories behind a railroad system that shaped a nation.

The Mugar Omni Theater is New England's only IMAX® Dome theater, and continues to provide visitors with some of the world's most awe-inspiring experiences via its five-story-high screen and heart-thumping surround sound system.
