The Dictionary of Canadian Biography online – a new look and new biographies!
The Dictionary of Canadian Biography/Dictionnaire biographique du Canada (DCB/DBC), one of the most wide-ranging bilingual research projects focused on the history of Canada, is proud to announce the launch of its updated website as well as the online publication of new biographies of persons who died after 1930, and updated biographies from the early volumes.
While maintaining the criteria of intellectual rigour and excellence for which it is renowned, the DCB/DBC now offers users a website whose graphic design and features have been extensively improved. In particular, researchers can now use a revised and enhanced search engine. They will also notice the wealth of DCB/DBC content when they see the biography of the day and explore thematic presentations on the War of 1812, the Prime Ministers of Canada in wartime and the First World War.
On 6 June, when the site launched, four new biographies became part of the online version of the DCB/DBC, which is freely accessible at www.biographi.ca. The site will be enriched weekly with a biography. Updated biographies from the early volumes will also gradually be introduced. You can find out more at “New Biographies” and “Updated Biographies” on the home page.
The DCB/DBC invites users to follow the project on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/dictionaryofcanadianbiography) and Twitter (twitter.com/dcb_dbc). Besides having access to exclusive features, these users will be among the first to be informed about online publication of biographies, new website features, and current projects.
Recognized as one of the best national biographical dictionaries in the world, the DCB/DBC contains over 8,400 freely accessible biographies of people who have played a role in Canadian history. In 2012 the DCB/DBC won the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media – the Pierre Berton Award, a tribute to the “rigorous research standards” that “make it the most authoritative source for Canadian history in the country,” according to the president and CEO of Canada’s History, Deborah Morrison, who also praised the “continuous efforts to make it more accessible.” The website represents the DCB/DBC’s most significant means of communicating history within Canada’s borders and beyond.
