Canadian Historical Review Prize for 2011
The University of Toronto Press is pleased to award the Canadian Historical Review Prize for 2011 to Tina Loo and Meg Stanley for their article, "An Environmental History of Progress: Damning the Peace and Columbia Rivers", appearing in issue 92.3, and selected by the CHR Editorial Board as the best article published in volume 92 of the journal.
"An Environmental History of Progress: Damning the Peace and Columbia Rivers" is the work of confident and thoughtful scholars. An innovative and ambitious piece of scholarship that builds on international studies, such as James Scott's arguments about 'high modernism,' this clearly-written article uses a diverse and deep range of methodologies and theoretical approaches to reconsider BC's damn-building boom in the middle of the twentieth century. It offers new ways to consider the links between geography, locality, and knowledge, thereby making a significant contribution to environmental history and also offers a fresh perspective on the history of mega-projects in Canada. The article does what good history should: it brings a new perspective to important changes over time, and does so in an engaging and accessible manner.
