Professeure émérite, Université du Nouveau-Brunswick

Professeure au Département d’histoire à l’Université Acadia de 1969 à 2002, Margaret Conrad est devenue en 2002 titulaire de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en études du Canada atlantique à l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Elle a également été titulaire de la chaire Nancy en études féminines à l’Université Mount Saint Vincent de 1996 à 1998. Elle a été élue membre de la Société royale du Canada en 1995, a reçu la Médaille du jubilé d’or de la Reine Elizabeth II en 2002 et la Médaille du jubilé de diamant de la Reine en 2012, et a été nommée Officier de l’Ordre du Canada en 2004 pour ses réalisations dans la rédaction et la promotion de l’histoire du Canada.

La professeure Conrad a publié de nombreux ouvrages dans les domaines de l'histoire du Canada et de l’histoire des femmes. Ses principales publications incluent : avec James K. Hiller, Atlantic Canada: A History, 3rd ed. (Toronto: Oxford University Press, 2015); avec d'autres, Canadians and their Pasts (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2013); A Concise History of Canada (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2012); avec Toni Laidlaw et Donna Smyth, No Place Like Home: The Diaries and Letters of Nova Scotia Women, 1771-1938 (Halifax: Formac, 1988); George Nowlan: Maritime Conservative in National Politics (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1986); et avec Alvin Finkel, trois manuels scolaires sur l’histoire canadienne qui connaissent une grande diffusion. Elle a été membre fondatrice du Comité éditorial de la revue Atlantis: A Women’s Studies Journal dont elle a été corédactrice en chef de 1977 à 1985, et elle a été corédactrice en chef de la Canadian Historical Review de 1997 à 2000.

Margaret Conrad a été membre du Conseil de la Société historique du Canada (1977-1980), du Comité exécutif de l’Association d’études canadiennes (1981-1983), du conseil des Archives nationales (1987-1991), de la Commission des lieux et monuments historiques du Canada (1990-1996), du conseil d'administration de la Société historique du Canada (2004-2010), du Comité scientifique consultatif du Conseil des académies canadiennes (2006-2012), et du Comité consultatif des communications, du marketing et de la programmation de la Commission de la capitale nationale (2011-2013). Elle était présidente de la Société historique du Canada de 2005 à 2007. Elle est présentement membre du Comité consultatif du Symposium Lafontaine-Baldwin et du comité de rédaction d'Acadiensis.

Les recherches de Margaret Conrad se concentrent sur des aspects de l’histoire du Canada atlantique comme moyen d’élargir la discussion sur la façon dont les personnes, les groupes et les gouvernements de la région se positionnent pour relever les défis du 21^e siècle. Ce projet fait partie d’un ensemble de projets qu'on peut retrouver sur le portail du Canada atlantique qui a été conçu pour explorer le potentiel des humanités numériques. Elle est également co-chercheure dans un projet de recherche financé par CRSH qui explore les vocabulaires d'indentité parmi les Acadiens aussi bien que parmi les descendants loyalistes au Nouveau-Brunswick.
