Heritage Fair Comes to Victoria!

Some 65 students from grade 4 to 10 from across British Columbia will come together in Victoria this July for a five-day history camp as the city plays host to the sixth annual Provincial Heritage Fair. The highlight of the Fair will be the showcase of student projects to the public at the Royal BC Museum on Sunday, July 7, 2013, from 12:00 to
3:00 pm.

“We are proud and excited about this opportunity to gather some of the brightest young historians in British Columbia,” says Michael Gurney, President of the BC Heritage Fairs Society, “As students share their stories with each other, and as the public meets the participants during the showcase, the result will be a deeper appreciation for the characters and events that bind Canadians together.”

Twelve Regional Fairs throughout the province choose students to attend the Provincial Fair. Victoria's projects and students include:

• "Wilfred Bigelow – the Lifesaver" by Sean Lider, gr. 9
• "The Commonwealth – an Imperfect Solution" by Sara Owen-Flood, gr. 9

On their arrival students will be welcomed by Aboriginal dancers and singers at the First Peoples House on the UVic campus. During the next few days they will visit historic sites including Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse, Ross Bay Cemetery, Chinatown, and the Legislative Buildings.

As part of the nation-wide Heritage Fairs program, each year over 5,000 B.C. students create project displays on a wide range of topics drawn from Canada's unique and diverse history.  The Provincial Heritage Fair is made possible through support of the BC Heritage Fairs Society and its sponsors.
