Historic Preservation Summer Workshops at Drew University, Jun 3-29

GROWING A LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM
Historical societies, Friends’ groups and boards in communities all over New Jersey have historic sites they would like to share with the public. Growing a Local History Museum will explore the issues and obstacles to making that happen. This one and a half day program is being offered through Drew University’s Historic Preservation program and starts June 3. Case studies and guest speakers cover topics including the formation of a mission statement, strategic planning, applying for grants, building restoration and adaptive reuse, developing education programs, curatorial and archival responsibilities, marketing and fund-raising. The class includes a field trip to a local history museum and addresses the development of an individual historic site action plan.

HISTORIC PLANTS AND PLANTINGS
Gardeners will understand that finding period-appropriate plants for a historic garden or restoration project can be problematic. Nurseries, even mail order suppliers, cannot always supply plants grown during the period you are interested in. During this June 29, one-day workshop on Historic Plants and Plantings students will learn a variety of methods for how to establish and grow more plants from seeds, cuttings and division. Students will take home a tray of seeds and flat of cuttings, with many coming from the 1930s original shrubs at the Cross Estate gardens.

Whatever your interest or need, Drew University’s Historic Preservation courses are designed to appeal to anyone eager to learn about preservation and will appeal to many including historic site administrators and volunteers, historic home and building owners, town planners, architects, real estate professionals and developers. Various ten-week courses and one-day workshops will be offered this fall as well and most classes and workshops meet on Drew University’s campus. This summer’s two programs’ dates are June 3, 4 and 8 and June 29. Registration fees for the summer program are $250 and $115 for the one-day workshop.
