This online workshop focuses on questions around UNESCO’s recognition of Intangible Cultural Heritage;  its identification, protection and sustainability; the role of the associated community; and, the connection of intangible heritage to tangible heritage – place and object. Live, real-time sessions combine theoretical discussion with practical examples. There is an online discussion forum to continue the conversation with other practitioners between live sessions.

Instructor: Marilyn Truscott is president of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage, and past-president of Australia ICOMOS. She is a heritage practitioner with 35 years’ experience as a museum curator, archeologist and senior government official having worked in Australia, the Middle East, Europe, Southern Africa and the Asia-Pacific.

This workshop can be taken individually for professional development, or applied to the UBC Certificate in Cultural Planning – an international professional learning program delivered 100% online. Other online workshops on offer this winter include: Intercultural Cities (Instructor: Phil Wood, North Yorkshire, UK), Cultural Planning: An International Perspective (Instructor: Dr. Lidia Varbanova, Montreal, Canada), and Digital Culture and Cultural Policy (Dr. Aleksandra Uzelac, Zagreb, Croatia)
