Imagining Gateways: Collaboration and Innovation in Teaching and Learning History

THEN/HiER Regional Annual Conference in History Education, Imagining Gateways: Collaboration and Innovation in Teaching and Learning History, Halifax, Nova Scotia, October 27-29, 2011.

In collaboration with the Nova Scotia Social Studies Teachers’ Association, the Nova Scotia Archives, and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, THEN/HiER held this conference which included discussions with historians, history educators, museum staff, and community members interested in pedagogy and practice related to history teaching and learning, especially through narratives of migration. The purpose of this national conference was to bring together people who are working in history education but who may not necessarily connect.

Tour and presentation at the Nova Scotia Archives, as well as performance by local musician and storyteller.

Friday October 28, 8:30-1:30pm
“Facilitating Talk between Teachers and Historians”
Panel with the Nova Scotia Social Studies Teachers' Association at Lockview Secondary School.

Friday October 28, 2:00-5:00pm
“Narratives of Migration”
Tour, panel session, and keynote at The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

Saturday October 29, 9:30-11:30am
“Big Questions Brunch”
Discussion and wrap-up session at Lord Nelson Hotel.
