ActiveHistory.ca is a web-based project that aims to make historical research more accessible to policy makers, the media and the public. There are four ways that we seek to meet these goals: 1) We publish short research-based papers on topics relevant to Canadian History; 2) We manage a database of people with historical expertise in order to make it easier to find people working on a particular historical subject; 3) We publish short book reviews that fit within ActiveHistory.ca’s mandate; 4) We promote events, websites and other resources that share a similar mandate through our blog and partnerships. ActiveHistory.ca is an inclusive project that aims to bring together people and groups who have an interest in encouraging historical thinking in Canada.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association Social Studies Council seeks to promote the study and improve the teaching of social studies in Alberta. It encourages and assists the establishment of regional councils, promotes in-service sessions to improve social studies education, and encourages dialogue relating to curriculum issues throughout the province. Its biennial meeting includes well-known keynote speakers and a variety of workshops that provide stimulation, incentives, and classroom tips, and is an invaluable opportunity for interaction, liaison, and networking among colleagues. Twice yearly it publishes the peer-reviewed journal One World in Dialogue which provides members with scholarly articles related to the practice and teaching of social studies. Its quarterly newsletter, Focus, provides members with up-to-date information, timely news articles, conference and workshop information, and short articles related to social studies teaching and learning.

Begbie Canadian History Contest Society

The Begbie Contest Society is a nonprofit society run on a volunteer basis by retired high school teachers. The society’s main goals are to promote Canadian history, to challenge students to think critically about historical problems, and to make available a wide variety of interesting primary sources. The society produced an annual Canadian history contest for secondary students which was designed to test critical thinking, and awarded cash prizes, medallions, and certificates of participation. It held its final contest in 2013, but continues to provide resources on Canadian history on its website.

In 2003, the British Columbia Heritage Fairs Society was formed to:

promote an awareness and understanding of Canadian history and heritage among students and adults in the province of British Columbia by organizing school, regional and provincial Heritage Fairs.
work closely with other organizations and agencies in the province whose goals and activities complement and support the goals of the Society.

In simpler language, it is about bringing people together to make history come alive. Each year some 6,000 students participate and 700 volunteers work with them, their teachers, and community museum staff.

First organized in 1922, the British Columbia Historical Federation is an umbrella organization of approximately 150 societies located throughout British Columbia. They include local historical societies, special interest groups, and museums and archives. The Federation seeks to stimulate public interest in British Columbia history, to promote the preservation and marking of historical sites and features, and to publish material on provincial history. Its major activities are the publication of a quarterly magazine, British Columbia History, and an annual conference that meets in a different part of the province in May of each year. The conference features presentations and field trips relating to the history of the area as well as workshops on topics of interest to members such as aspects of operating historical organizations or methods of historical research.

The BC Social Studies Teachers’ Association’s primary objectives are to promote the teaching of social studies, to support and improve the teaching of social studies, and to liaise with the Ministry of Education regarding curriculum development and changes.

Each year the BCSSTA holds its annual conference to provide members with a well known keynote speaker, a variety of informative and stimulating workshops, and an opportunity for colleagues to network and share their teaching practices. In addition, the BCSSTA reaches out to new teachers at the BCTF New Teachers’ Conference and at information workshops at various colleges and universities. The Canadian History of Education Association (CHEA) was founded in Calgary in 1980 to promote the study in Canada of the educational past. Its members come from a variety of fields and examine educational practices in both formal and informal settings through many disciplinary perspectives. They include private scholars and graduate students as well as those affiliated with faculties of education, departments of history and other university departments, teachers, members of school boards and other educational institutions. CHEA also maintains active links with scholars internationally, particularly in the United States, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

The association organizes a bilingual biennial conference (usually towards the end of October) and offers prizes for the best English and French language publications in the history of Canadian education. In 1988, CHEA established a peer reviewed journal, Historical Studies in Education / Revue d’histoire de l’éducation which is published twice yearly.

The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) is a national organization for the advancement of the Canadian museum community that unites, represents and serves museums and its workers through professional development programs and conferences; participation in national research projects such as Canadians and Their Pasts; promotion of Canadian museums at the international level; and many other programs and services.

CMA administers Young Canada Works, a program that gives young Canadians an opportunity to gain hands on experience within the heritage, arts and cultural sectors. CMA also offers a number of bursaries (for students, young professionals, and established professionals and their institutions) and each year presents awards to celebrate and encourage excellence within the museum sector.

Canadians and Their Pasts

The Canadians and Their Pasts alliance brought together seven university researchers and twelve community organizations with an interest in history to determine how Canadian engage the past in their everyday lives. Launched in 2005 with the help of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Community-University Research Alliance grant, the project was centred around an ambitious survey of 3,419 Canadians, which explored, among other things, their general interest in history, activities related to the past, and the trustworthiness of such sources as museums and heritage sites, family stories, academic studies, and the Internet. The rich findings from the survey are analyzed in various articles and in a book-length study, Canadians and Their Pasts (University of Toronto Press, 2013).

The Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian History project provides engaging, high-quality materials to schools and universities for the teaching of historical methods and Canadian history. It is also used in a wide variety of other courses including law, language, literature, aboriginal issues and many others. The project, based in the Department of History at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, has created a series of instructional websites based on the premise that students can be drawn into Canadian history, critical thinking, and archival research through the enticement of solving historical cold crimes. All the material, available in both English and French, is provided free as a public service.

From 1992 to 2013 the mission of the Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres Nord-Pas de Calais was to provide initial teacher training (elementary and secondary), including preparing applicants for competitions for teaching positions and providing professional training for new teachers. The training was both theoretical as well as practical and done within a framework alternating between general professional training and teacher education, with teachers in training responsible for a certain number of hours of classroom teaching all year long. Research on teacher training and education was developed within IUFM. In 2013 IUFM ceased to exist, and its functions were taken over by the École Supérieure du Professorat et de l'Éducation.

The Museums Association of Saskatchewan is a non-profit, collective organization, representing more than 240 institutional members, and an additional 200 individual members. It is governed by a member-elected Board of Directors representative of the museum community.

MAS’s purpose is to serve museums in Saskatchewan and work for their advancement. Membership is open to everyone. MAS provides educational opportunities for museums and personnel, and their governing bodies, and is responsible for establishing the first Standards for Museums that now guide museum development across the country.

MAS raises public awareness of museums and fosters communication among members of the museum community. It also represents the interests and concerns of the museum community to governments and other agencies.

The National Centre for History Education was a federal government online resource for teachers of history. The NCHE was supported by history educators from many fields including historians, curriculum officials, and history educators, as well as by history teachers, heritage specialists and public historians.

Tony Taylor, 2001-2007 Director of the Monash-based National Centre for History Education, developed national history standards (a set of commonly agreed professional expectations) and in late 2008 was involved in drafting the new Australian curriculum guidelines in history.

Nova Scotia Social Studies Teachers' Association

As a professional association of public school teachers in the field of social studies, the primary goals of the Nova Scotia Social Studies Teachers' Association (NSSSTA) are to improve professional practice by increasing member knowledge and understanding, and to designate ideas, trends and new developments.

Our members include active, retired and intern teachers of history, geography and related social studies from Primary to grade 12, as well as subscribing members from a variety of interest areas.

Through our website, and support for travel and professional and student development, we facilitate networking among teachers and promote access to teaching resources. We also provide a communications link between the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and social studies teachers.

In addition to these ongoing activities, we organize an annual conference, providing an opportunity for teachers to hear speakers, participate in workshops and discover and acquire resources from a wide variety of historical and geographic fields, and relevant to all grade levels.

Ontario History and Social Sciences Teachers’ Association

This province-wide organization has represented Ontario history and social science teachers for over 35 years. OHASSTA is nationally recognized for the professional development provided to teachers both on the website and at the annual conference where teachers can dialogue with each other from across panels, and across the province. OHASSTA puts out a professional journal, RAPPORT, three times a year which is full of “teacher talk.” Recently, OHASSTA partnered with OHHSSCA and the Critical Thinking Consortium (TC²) to produce a resource for Grade 10 History teachers: Exemplars in Historical Thinking: 20th Century Canada and has hosted three Summer Institutes in Critical Thinking. OHASSTA also has an important role by taking the voice of the classroom teacher to the Ontario Ministry of Education in curriculum discussions and to the Ontario Teachers Federation. The OHASSTA executive is composed of elected volunteers, most of whom are currently teaching full time in classrooms.

The Ontario History, Humanities, and Social Science Consultants' Association (OHHSSCA) is an advocacy group that works on behalf of History and Social Studies Teachers in Ontario promoting and supporting best practice for teaching and learning, from grade one to graduation. We maintain contact with our provincial Ministry of Education for the purpose of curriculum review and renewal, advising them on new developments in our field. We also organize conferences for leaders in our provincial boards on a variety of education issues, and liaise with other subject and teacher associations in the province to build consensus on future directions for history education.
