Penney Clark is Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia. Her research interests include history teaching and learning and curriculum in historical and political contexts. Her publications include articles in History of Education Quarterly, the Journal of Canadian Studies, the Canadian Journal of Education, the American Journal of Education, the McGill Journal of Education, Theory and Research in Social Education and Papers of the Bibliographical Society of Canada. She was a contributor to the History of the Book in Canada project, volumes Two and Three. She is currently conducting research on textbook production and provision in Ontario and British Columbia, 1846 to 2005, funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Standard Research Grant. She was also the 2006 recipient of the Marie Tremaine Fellowship from the Bibliographical Society of Canada.

A member of Acadia University’s History Department from 1969 to 2002, Professor Conrad was appointed Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Studies at the University of New Brunswick in 2002. She also held Nancy’s Chair in Women’s Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University (1996-1998). She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1995), awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and appointed Officer of the Order of Canada (2004) for her achievements in the writing and promotion of Canadian history.

Anne Marie Goodfellow, former THEN|HiER Network Manager, has a PhD in anthropology from the University of British Columbia. She has managed several projects related to social studies teaching and curriculum, and is the author of a Native language immersion program, Gangananamasa K_wak_waka’wak_w (Children of All K_wak_wala-speaking People) (Nimpkish Education Board 1991). She also wrote the elementary curriculum First Nations Journeys of Justice (Law Courts Education Society of BC 1994) which won a Justice Achievement Award from the US National Association for Court Management in 1995. Her research interests include early relations between colonists and indigenous people in North America, and the history and consequences of language contact on this continent.

Viviane Gosselin is Curator of Contemporary Culture at the Museum of Vancouver and Associate Researcher with the UBC Centre for the Study of Historical Consciousness. Her doctoral research examined how frameworks associated with the discourse on the pedagogy of historical thinking help conceptualize the experience of exhibition makers and museum visitors. Her study underscored the need for museums to consider their role as promoters of historical consciousness in fulfilling their educational mandate and maintaining their social relevance. Other research interests include intercultural curation, citizen-curation, and critical museology. She has been invited to speak at professional and academic conferences in Quebec, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

Jan Haskings-Winner is a teacher in the Toronto District School Board. She has taught for over 30 years in Malaysia, northern Ontario, central Ontario and Toronto in a variety of schools and communities. She is Past-President of the Ontario History and Social Sciences Teachers' Association (OHASSTA) and has been on its executive for eight years. She was seconded to teach history to teacher education students in the Pre-Service Teacher Education program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT) from 2005-2008 and 2009-2010. Jan also teaches at Queen's and Lakehead universities in their Additional Qualifications continuing education programs for teachers in History and Social Sciences.

In addition to her publications listed below, Jan also contributed to Exemplars in Historical Thinking: 20^t^h Century Canada (2008) as well as to curriculum writing projects for the Ministry of Education (Ontario) and the Toronto District School Board, including the "Genocide and Crimes against Humanity" course.

Jocelyn Létourneau is Canada Research Chair in Quebec’s Contemporary History at the Université Laval (Quebec City, Canada). A member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J., he is also fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Trudeau Foundation. A regular visiting professor in foreign universities, he was the principal investigator in a SHRCC funded Community-University Research Alliance (Canadians and their Pasts). In 2010, he was a Fulbright scholar at both University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University, and a visiting scholar at the Institute for the Study of the Americas (University of London). Dr. Létourneau is the author or editor of many books. Among his major works are Les Années sans guide : le Canada à l’ère de l’économie migrante (Boréal, 1996); A History for the Future : Rewriting Memory and Identity in Quebec Today (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2004); Le Québec, les Québécois : un parcours historique (Fides, 2004), Le Coffre à outils du chercheur debutant.

Stéphane Lévesque is Vice Dean Research and Professional Development of the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa. Before taking on this position, he was Director of Graduate Studies for francophone programs. Expert in the field of history education, he has presented and written extensively on questions of historical thinking, identity, narration and technology in education. Dr. Lévesque is the author of Thinking Historically: Educating Students for the 21st Century (University of Toronto Press, 2008), a book which has been praised internationally for its impact on history teaching and learning. He is the director of the Virtual History Laboratory (VH Lab), the first CFI research centre in Canada to study the on-line learning of school history, and the creator of the Virtual Historian™ website, a bilingual platform used across the country for inquiry-based lessons in Canadian history.

Ruth Sandwell is Associate Professor in the History and Philosophy of Education Program at the Department of Theory and Policy Studies, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto (OISE/UT). Founding co-director of THEN/HiER in 2004, Dr. Sandwell was also a co-director and educational director of the award winning "Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian History" (www.canadianmysteries.ca), a pan-Canadian collaborative project that created twelve on-line archives and educational support materials relating to a particular mystery from Canada’s past. This project won the 2008 MERLOT on-line education History Classic Award and the Pierre Berton Award for Canadian History.

Alan Sears is Professor of Social Studies Education at the University of New Brunswick. He has been a history and social studies teacher for more than 30 years, working at all levels from primary to graduate school. Dr. Sears’ research and writing have been in the fields of social studies, citizenship education, and history education. He has published more than 50 articles and book chapters and co-authored and co-edited a number of books, including Education, Politics and Religion: Reconciling the Civic and the Sacred in Education (Routledge, 2010), Globalization, the Nation-State and the Citizen: Dilemmas and Directions for Civics and Citizenship Education (Routledge, 2010), and Education, Globalization and The Nation (Palgrave MacMillan 2015). He is also Editor for the journal Citizenship Teaching and Learning.

Peter Seixas is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia and Director of the Centre for the Study of Historical Consciousness (www.cshc.ubc.ca). He taught high school social studies in Vancouver for 15 years and earned a Ph.D in history from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is author of numerous articles in Canadian and international journals, editor of Theorizing Historical Consciousness (University of Toronto Press 2004), and co-editor with Peter Stearns and Sam Wineburg of Knowing, Teaching and Learning History: National and International Perspectives (New York University Press 2000). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada), and holds the Canada Research Chair in Historical Consciousness at the University of British Columbia.

Amy von Heyking is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta. Her research interests include history teaching and learning in elementary schools, and history of school curriculum. Her academic publications include articles in the Canadian Journal of Education, History of Education Quarterly, Historical Studies in Education and Canadian Social Studies. She is the author of Creating Citizens: History and Identity in Alberta’s Schools, 1905 to 1980 (University of Calgary Press 2006), and was a contributor to The Anthology of Social Studies: Issues and Strategies for Elementary Teachers (2008) edited by Penney Clark and Roland Case. She has written and edited numerous teaching resources for elementary school social studies, including four volumes of Teaching with Dear Canada and the Social Studies Through Literature series for Scholastic Canada. She currently serves on the editorial board of Canadian Social Studies.
