The History Education Network/Histoire et éducation en réseau (THEN/HiER) held this symposium in Ottawa, June 4-5, 2015 with participants from across Canada. With a focus on recent developments in telling the history of Sir John Franklin’s last expedition, the symposium brought Canada's leading experts in history education together with historians, Inuit cultural advisors, underwater archaeologists, curriculum specialists from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories (NWT), and teachers from northern and southern Canada.

The event was held in conjunction with the launch of the new website The Franklin Mystery: Life and Death in the Arctic, the latest addition to the Great Unsolved Mysteries in Canadian History (GUMICH) project.

Sean Carleton and Julia Smith, PhD Candidates at Trent University, are representatives of the Graphic History Collective, a group of activists, writers, artists, historians, and researchers who are passionate about comics’ history and social change. Sean opens by discussing the history of comics and the emerging style of writing through the late 19_th and early 20_th centuries, and ties that history into the establishment of the Graphic History Collective group. Julia then discusses their newest project, titled “Drawn to Change: Graphic Histories of Working-Class Struggle,” its origins and the themes that drive it.

The Threat of Revisionism to Japanese History Textbooks: State Intervention and Citizen Resistance

Over the past two decades, Japan’s junior high school history textbooks have been highly politicized. Conservative scholars, politicians, and journalists have attempted to justify Imperial Japan’s military aggression in Asia, culminating in the publication of two junior high school history textbooks written from a revisionist perspective. However, many teachers and scholars have resisted this movement by describing historical facts accurately in other textbooks. Working collaboratively with schoolteachers from 1975 onward, I carried out fieldwork collecting documents and testimonies on the atrocities committed by the Japanese the Japanese Imperial Army in Southeast Asia. Current and retired teachers have also edited an alternative textbook to be implemented from 2016. This talk will examine the political backdrop of revisionism and ongoing resistance efforts.

Brent Pavey, Head of History at Waterloo Collegiate Institute, shares his vision of how to engage students in political and historical debates. He explains numerous simulations which he has implemented in the classroom from mock UN Security Council meetings to Confederation debates. Pavey explains that the goal of these projects is to “engage students so they can imagine fulfilling the shoes of political and historical figures.”

Lindsay Hall, Head of History at Clark Road Secondary in the Thames Valley District School Board, discusses the challenges facing teachers of history in the public school system. Hall explains that since students are required to only take one Canadain history class throughout high school, teachers must strive to instill curiosity in their grade 9 students. Hall provides examples of innovative activities and projects designed to build student confidence and subsequently, encourage students to take an interest in studying the past. Hall goes on to say that before students can “think like historians,” skills like close reading need to be developed. In her own experience, many grade 9 students lack reading skills, requiring her to become a “teacher of reading” before a “teacher of history.” Hall also encourages educators to be cognisant of the way students encounter the past in their everyday lives through tv shows, video games, novels, and the internet, among other topics.

Jean-Pierre Morin, a member of the board of directors of the National Council on Public History, offers insight on the growth and decline of Public History programs in north America, as well as internationally. Morin discusses why many programs are being closed down on regional and local levels, as well as addresses the decreasing number of students enrolling in Public History Programs in Canada and the United States. Focusing internationally, Morin offers insight on the growth of Public History in Europe, how the idea of Public History existing is very new there, and how they are adapting their programs to the North American models that have been established here.He also discusses the identity crisis that is facing many Public History graduates, in that there are no jobs available for them when they graduate.
